The Manhattan cocktail is considered one of the best cocktails ever created, its taste with bitter and sweet nuances is difficult to explain. A classic before the famous Martini. In another article, we talk about the aviator cocktail, today from the famous Manhattan.

History of the Manhattan cocktail

Its history is long and its creation subject to controversy. The truth is that no one knows exactly who invented it the origin of this cocktail. The most widely supported theory is that it was created in the 1870s at the Manhattan Club in New York, supposedly for a banquet organized by Lady Randolph Churchill, the mother of Winston Churchill, in honor of presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden.

The success of the banquet made the cocktail fashionable in the most elite circles of New York. People referred to the combination with the name of the club where it was supposedly created, 'The Manhattan'.

However, as often happens with other cocktails, there are other hypotheses about its creation coming from William F. Mulhall, a bartender who worked at the Hoffman House for over 30 years. William claims that the Manhattan cocktail was invented by a man surnamed Black in a Broadway bar in New York below Houston Street.

The cocktail was made with American whiskey or Bourbon, but during the 'Prohibition' of 1920-1933 Canadian rye whiskey was used because this liquor was easier to obtain than bourbon.
